Urmi Dhagat

Dr Urmi Dhagat is a macromolecular structural biologist with expertise in x-ray crystallography, molecular modelling, biophysical studies and structure-based drug design. Dr Dhagat obtained her PhD in 2012 from the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Over the course of her PhD, she published 14 journal articles of which 7 were first author publications. In 2012, Dr Dhagat obtained an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship and joined the laboratory of Prof Michael Parker to study cytokine function in health and disease. Dr Dhagat has focused her research on the beta common family of cytokines with the aim of understanding how they assemble and signal. She uses this knowledge to discover small drug-like molecules that block receptor activation and signalling with the long term aim of developing these molecules into drugs to treat blood cancers and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and asthma. Dr Dhagat has been successful in obtaining a Victorian Cancer Council Project grant (2017-2019) and charitable funding worth $65,000 to support her research.
