Professor Phillips is Head of School in the School of Earth Sciences and Director of the School's Noble Gas Laboratory. Prof Phillips uses the 40Ar/39Ar geochronology method as a tool for determining the ages and thermal histories of geological samples.
Recent research in this field has focussed on the timing and formation of ore deposits, particularly gold and diamond deposits, and the dating of young volcanic rocks less than 1 million years in age. Prof Phillips is also an expert on diamonds, mineral inclusions in diamonds and diamond host rocks, kimberlites and lamproites.
