Simon is an NHMRC fellow at the Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne. Simon is interested in community interventions that aim to prevent poor health outcomes from developing.
In 2020, Simon won a Dyason travel award to collaborate with First Nation researchers at the University of Toronto. In 2018 he received an Endeavour Research Leadership Fellowship from the Australian Department of Education and Training and spent 6 months in the Chief Medical Officers Office at the First Nations Health Authority in Vancouver (July-December 2019). In 2017 he received a NHMRC fellowship to spend two years at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2017-2019) and then two years at the Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne (2020-2021). In 2016 he received a Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship and spent 12 months at the Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training in New York City focusing on cohort studies of gay men. In 2015 Simon was awarded a McKenzie postdoctoral fellowship based in the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of Melbourne. In 2014, he received a PhD in epidemiology while leading a trial which evaluated a sexually transmitted infection and viral hepatitis intervention in four Aboriginal communities in New South Wales. Simon is also a graduate of the Master of Applied Epidemiology program, a field based epidemiology training program that involved joining a team tasked with investigating and stopping outbreaks and evaluating surveillance systems. Prior to gaining academic qualifications Simon lived and worked in Thailand and Vietnam. In Thailand he worked for a local NGO on a CDC and International Labor Organization funded project which involved collaborating with multinational companies which had factories in Asia to provide HIV education and training.
