I am a film historian and filmmaker, interested in German, Chilean and Argentine cinema and in transnational cinematic relations between Europe and Latin America.
Connecting academic rigor and creative practice, my work aims to raise the visibility of film as intervention in political and social dialogues.
As part of a project that examines the legacy of the Chilean Pinochet regime in Europe and Latin America I made the documentary, Películas escondidas. Un viaje entre el exilio y la memoria/Hidden Films. A Journey from Exile to Memory (in collaboration with Alejandro Areal Vélez, 2016). This “film about film” is an investigation into German-Chilean visual material produced in East Germany in the 1970s and 1980s in collaboration with Chilean émigré artists. I highlight the importance of these film archives as a form of political diplomacy and as a carrier of memory for diverse social and cultural groups. The film has been chosen to participate in the competition of a number of international film festivals.
Together with Carolina Rocha, I co-edited the volume Contemporary Latin American Cinema. Resisting Neoliberalism? (Palgrave Macmillan 2018). I am currently working on a monograph about director Peter Lilienthal that analyses the work of the German-Jewish-Uruguayan filmmaker in the context of transcultural film making practices of the 1970s.
