Dr David Sequeira is Director, Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.Much of Dr Sequeira’s research has focused on the use of colour and geometry in the creation of contemplative experiences for viewers. In addition to the ongoing themes of colour, geometry and contemplation, his current research explores curatorship as arts practice.

Implicit in this research is an investigation of language and information within the context of space and time. His research practice incorporates painting, sculpture, installation, photography, curatorship and visual arts policy, advocacy and audience engagement.Dr Sequeira has exhibited his work extensively throughout Australia and his work is held in important public collections including the National Gallery of Australia. He is recipient of several residencies and awards including the Australia Council for the Arts studio residency in Paris, the Collex Museum of Contemporary Art acquisitive prize, Artist in residence at the University of Texas, Dallas and the Wyndham Art Prize.In 2014/2015 Dr Sequeira curated the highly acclaimed exhibition My Learned Object: Collections & Curiosities for the Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne. Containing over 2000 objects ranging from paintings to dead animals in formaldehyde, the exhibition surveyed over 30 of the University’s Cultural Collections. Dr Sequeira has extensive experience in the areas of public art, cultural programming and community engagement. Working closely with architects, social planners, town planners and designers, Dr Sequeira was the artistic consultant for the Revitalisation of Greater Dandenong. This project, including his 500 metre installation of coloured lights ‘Gateway’ has won several state and national awards for urban design and public art.Prior to his current role as Director Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Dr Sequeira held senior positions in a range of public cultural institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery and Old Parliament House, Canberra. He is the former Artistic Director, Audience Engagement at the National Film and Sound Archive and the former Director of Events and Business Development at Australian Parliament House, Canberra.
