Miriama Young

Lecturer in Music (Composition) at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Faculty of Fine Arts & Music.
Miriama Young is an award-winning composer and sound artist. Her work seamlessly combines technology, soundscape, interactivity, field recordings, sound art with live acoustic instruments to produce unique sound worlds.

Without distinction for genre, she collaborates with artists across dance, film, radio, installation to create physically immersive experiences that cross sensory dimensions.

Her instrumental and vocal music is programmed in concerts stretching from Norway to New Zealand, including commissions and performances by Scottish Opera, Sydney Symphony Fellows, Stroma (NZ), Strike Percussion (NZ), HD Duo (Sydney), Xenia Pestova (UK) and Rolf Hind (UK), the Nash Ensemble (UK) and So Percussion (USA).
Her film soundtracks have attracted awards at major festivals worldwide, her installations at Vivid Sydney, New York City's Puffin Room and Gallery 138, and her radio work on National Public Radio (USA), ABC (Australia), and Radio New Zealand. She has represented New Zealand at the International World Music Days Festival and is represented by SOUNZ and the Australian Music Centre.

A Fulbright scholar, Miriama attained Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music (1st Class Hons) degrees from The New Zealand School of Music Te Kōkī; The University of Wellington, and her MFA and PhD from Princeton University. She has held artist residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colonies.

Her scholarly work examines the human voice and recording technology, and a monograph on this subject, Singing the Body Electric: The Human Voice and Sound Technology (Routledge, 2015) is listed in the Times Higher Education Best Books 2015. Chapters and articles on this theme are published in Oxford Handbook of Voices Studies, Leonardo Music Journal, and Contemporary Music Review.
Miriama supervises postgraduate students across Composition (acoustic and electro-acoustic) and Musicology (20th and 21st century).
