A Professor of Virology in the Peter Doherty Institute and Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, Professor Fazakerley's research interests are in virus diseases of high medical or economic impact and in particular, in arthropod-borne virus infections. Professor Fazakerley was previously Director and CEO of the UK’s national animal virology and vaccinology Institute, The Pirbright Institute, a world leading centre for research and surveillance of virus diseases of livestock and viruses that spread from animals to humans.

Prior to being Director of The Pirbright Institute, he was Professor of Virology in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh and a Science Group Leader at The Roslin Institute. His earlier career and training included: The University of Cambridge UK; The Scripps Research Institute, CA; the University of Pennsylvania, PA; St Thomas’ Hospital Medical school, University of London and the University of Durham, UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Royal Society of Biology. He has been an editor of the Journal of General Virology; executive editor of Neuropathology & Applied Neurobiology, chair of the Food Standards Agency (UK), TSE Research Funding Panel, a trustee of the Jenner Vaccine Foundation and a member of many national and international committees including: the UK Chief Medical Officer’s Committee on Vaccine Research and Development; the Blackett Review (UK Gov’t Chief Scientist’s Office) on Biological Detection and the National Institutes of Health (NIAID) USA Special Emphasis Panel on National and Regional Biocontainment Laboratories and the global ‘Group of High Containment Laboratory Directors���.
