Jonathon Lum completed his PhD at Monash University in 2018. His thesis focused on frames of spatial reference in Dhivehi, an Indo-Aryan language spoken throughout the Maldives, and the extent to which frames of reference relate to non-linguistic representations of space as well as to the physical environment in which speakers live.

Jonathon's current research interests include sociolinguistic variation in spatial language, the typology of frames of reference and their subtypes, and the relationships between egophoricity, person marking and various morphosyntactic and sociopragmatic phenomena including reported speech constructions and pronoun avoidance for politeness.
