Professor Aickelin (Head of School of Computing and Information Systems) focuses on Artificial Intelligence, Optimisation and Data Mining for medicine. Prior to Melbourne, he was Vice-President of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and Head of School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham.

He also served for many years as a strategic adviser for Artificial Intelligence to the UK Research Councils and Government. Here are his latest thoughts on AI and what it means for the workforce of the future.

His specific expertise is in the modelling stages of biomedical problems with a focus on robust methods to overcome uncertainty. Typical application areas of his work are Decision Support and Optimisation in Health Informatics. He has authored over 200 papers in leading international journals and conferences (Google citations 10000+, H-index 54) and participated in over 100 international conference programme committees. Since 2007 he has been an associate editor of the leading international journal in his field (IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation).

In 2004, Professor Aickelin won EPSRC's largest Adventure Grant (top 1% of national projects - EPSRC in the UK is equivalent to ARC in Australia). In 2007, he was awarded an Advanced EPSRC Fellowship ranking number 1 at the national panel (five-year Future Fellowship). In total, he has won over 10 million AUD of funding as Principal Investigator and over 40 million AUD as Co-Investigator in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Machine Learning and Decision Support.

Uwe works closely with China, including as Visiting Professor at Shanghai Business School, Distinguished Professor at Shanghai Academy, Concurrent Professor at Fudan University and Special Professor at Shenzhen University. In 2018 he was awarded the prestigious title of Qianjiang Scholar (钱江学者). He has received the 2019 LinkedIn Spotlight award – for one of Australia’s 12 most influential profiles and his YouTube videos have been watched by more than 600,000 people:
