Associate Professor Sumit Kane's research focus is on the equity, quality, and responsiveness of low and middle income country health systems. In his inquiries he takes a post-positivist, reflexive stance to examine issues and experiences from multiple perspectives (social, systems, operational), always with a view to inform the development of feasible solutions.
Current Research Projects
Performance of health workers. Location - Global. Ongoing: Sumit has a large and varied portfolio of research on the performance and motivation of health workers. Much of this research has been conducted on community health workers, in different parts of the world.
Enhancing responsiveness of health systems (RESPONSE). Location - Ghana and Vietnam. 2020-2023.Joint Health Systems Research Initiative/Medical Research Council, UK: Sumit is the Co-Lead of the RESPONSE study which aims to inform improvements to the responsiveness of health systems to the needs of the most vulnerable sections of society.
Study on health seeking behaviour in four Indian states. Location - India. 2018-2021. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: This multi-method study examines the care-seeking journeys of patients suffering from chronic illnesses. Sumit is the overall coordinator of the study and leads the multi-site focused ethnographic inquiry.
Researching trust relations in health systems. Location: India (Current). Ongoing: Together with collaborators from Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics, Pune, India, and University of Kent, UK, the study entails a sociological examination of trust relations in the health system with a view to identify opportunities and means to maintain and rebuild trust in the health system and the medical profession.
Collaboration on One Health Economics for Systems (COHERES). Location: Cambodia (Vietnam and Lao PDR to follow). 2020-2023. ACIAR Australia: Sumit leads an analysis of the implementation of policies and regulations to unpack how various actors experience the regulatory apparatuses of the human health and agricultural systems. The COHERES study will identify synergies, disconnects, contradictions and opportunities with a view to improve the effectiveness of regulations.
