Marija Edinborough

Dr Edinborough joined the Melbourne Dental School as a Senior Lecturer in Oral Anatomy and Histology in July 2018. Before that she was a Marie Curie European Research Fellow at University College London, Institute of Archaeology, and a Research Associate at the University of Belgrade.

She has 12 years of active research in the field of Bioarcheology and Dental Anthropology. Her research is focused on areas of life history theory and mineralized dental tissues histology. She has led five research projects, investigating tooth cementum annulation, genetic identification of Treponema pallidum, and life history parameters of people dated to the Neolithic Demographic Transition. Her projects were funded by German Academic Exchange Service, Bavarian Ministry of Science and Arts, the European Commission - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action for Excellence in Science, and most recently from the F. A. Kernot Foundation of the Melbourne Dental School. Dr Edinborough’s research interest is related to narrowing the methodological gaps between physical/dental anthropology, medicine, biology and archaeology. Her current programme of research focuses on a range of topics that can be summarised into two key areas: 1) methodological advances in dental histology, with focus on microscopic study of mineralized dental tissues from archaeological collections and clinical patients; 2) life history parameters identification from tooth cementum microstructure, including analysis dental remains taken from radiocarbon dated archaeological assemblages allowing reconstruction of ageing profiles and other life history variables with a direct microscopic analytical method.
