Darren Wardle is a Melbourne based visual artist with an enduring interest in sites where architecture meets nature and the proximity of utopia to dystopia. His work spans painting, printmaking and digital image making.

During his 30 years of practice, Darren has held over 20 solo shows and has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally. Darren's works are held in significant institutional, public, and corporate collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Heidi Museum of Modern Art, Latrobe University Museum Collection, RMIT University Collection, City of Banyule Collection and Geelong Gallery. In 2014 Darren exhibited at Saatchi Gallery in London and held a solo exhibition at La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre, which featured his confronting series of Head Case Study portraits in its entirety. In 2016 he executed a 10 metre long mural commissioned by the Shepparton Art Museum, his largest work to date. Darren won the Gold Coast Art Prize in 2013 and has been a finalist in many others. Television documentaries have been made about his work, he has been awarded numerous grants and scholarships and has been an artist in residence at prestigious international studio programs. His work has been reviewed and written about in art journals, magazines, and newspapers around the world. Darren was recently an artist in residence at the Leipzig International Art Program located at the Spinnerei in Germany, home of the New Leipzig School and a renowned centre for contemporary painting. His work was included in curated exhibitions in Leipzig and Berlin during his time there. Darren completed a BA Honours in Fine Art at RMIT University in 1997 and was awarded his MFA by Research at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2014. He is a lecturer in Graphic Design at the Victorian College of the Arts and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, researching the critical significance of ruin theory and ruin aesthetics in contemporary visual art and their potential value in emerging practical contexts.
