Peter Sherrell

Dr Peter Sherrell is a Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Melbourne. He works on the development of better clean energy storage, conversion, and harvesting systems through his expertise in materials science, electrochemistry, and nanotechnology.

His current projects focus on manipulating (enhancing) the properties of piezoelectric and triboelectric polymer composites and developing 2D water splitting catalysts to efficiently produce hydrogen fuel from the ocean.

Peter completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Wollongong in 2012, and has international experience during his postdoctorate studies working on nanomaterials for tissue engineering at Linkoping University, Sweden (2013 - 2015). He was awarded the prestigious Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship to move to the Department of Materials, Imperial College London in 2015, where he developed synthesis and characterization tools for 2D materials beyond graphene.

Peter is an advocate for equity and equality in science, being a member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Inclusion and Diversity Commission since 2019. Peter ’ s passion for science communication has seen him appear on ABC news, in Cosmos magazine, and in scientific podcasts.
