Dr. Vini Gautam is a lecturer in the department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr Gautam is motivated to develop novel devices and technologies to address some of the key challenges in biomedicine.

She currently holds an ARC DECRA as well as a Westpac Research Fellowship. Dr Gautam completed her PhD in Materials Science in 2014 from JNCASR, Bangalore (India) where she worked in the field of bionic vision. Her research was the first ever demonstration of using semiconducting polymer based optoelectronic interfaces for stimulating blind retinas. She then moved to Canberra where she was based at the Australian National University. Here she worked with researchers across physics, chemistry, engineering and neuroscience to lead a corss-disciplinary project in the field of neuroengineering. Her research has since been focused on developing nanostructured scaffolds to engineer the growth of neuronal cells.Dr Gautam has an experience of experimental techniques in both materials science and neuroscience. She is interested in studying the interaction of neuronal cells with various kinds of organic and inorganic materials for applications in neural tissue engineering and neuro prosthesis. She is also involved in a multi-institution project focused on understanding dementia by developing novel technologies to study brain organoids.Along with her research, Dr Gautam is passionate about science communication. She has constantly been involved in public outreach and has been recognized for her efforts by various awards (ACT Young Tall Poppy 2018, Falling Walls Lab winner 2017).
