Australian composer Barry Conyngham studied with Peter Sculthorpe and in Japan with Toru Takemitsu. He is Emeritus Professor from the University of Melbourne, the University of Wollongong and Southern Cross University, and President and VC of the latter (1994-2000). He is also the first musician to hold the Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University (2000-2001). He has been a Churchill, Harkness and Fulbright Fellowship holder and in 1997 he became a Member of the Order of Australia. In 2021 he was conferred as Redmond Barry Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Music. With premieres and performances of his works in Japan, North and South America, Europe, UK and Australia, Conyngham is a distinguished Australian international composer. He has over eighty published works and over thirty recordings including those by the London, New Zealand, Sydney and Melbourne Symphany Orchestras, as well as ensembles from Japan, UK, Europe, America and Australia.
Over his career he has published almost 100 works (Universal Edition and Hal Leonard) and over 50 recordings and videos, including those by the London, Netherlands Radio, New Zealand, and all Australian Orchestras, as well as ensembles and soloists from Poland, Japan, the UK, Europe, Russia, America and Australia.

Notable premieres of the last decade, including orchestral works Cala Tuent [2008], double bass concerto Kangaroo Island [2009] Gardener of Time [200911], Symphony [2012], Anzac [2014], Diasporas [2016], Isao [2019] been in Palma, Hong Kong, Boston, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, Vienna, Munich, and St Petersburg.

His latest orchestral commission One Small Step received its first performance on May 2nd 2019 by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. On October 10th of the same year the premier of Isao for violin and orchestra took place in Saint Petersburg by that city's Symphony Orchestra.
