Sonja Molnar

Sonja Molnar is a lecturer in Media and Communication at the University of Melbourne. She received her PhD in English Applied Linguistics from the University of Salzburg, where she taught courses on media discourse for six years.

Thereafter she was a postdoctoral research assistant at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Her main research areas include advertising discourse, sustainability communications, multimodal genres and media linguistics. Due to her professional background in marketing and public relations, Sonja Molnar is particularly interested in the role of language to construct and promote social and political ideologies. Her doctoral dissertation explores how semantic and semiotic choices in British, American and Australian print ads have changed over the last four centuries and how these changes have contributed to the propagation of ethnic and gender stereotypes. Her current research project examines how environmental news is communicated in order to determine which linguistic choices promote and which inhibit action on climate change.
