Shwathy Ramesan is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the group of Prof Amanda Ellis. Her research is focused on delivery of DNA Nanomaterials to protocells.
Shwathy Ramesan completed a Bachelor in Nanotechnology with a specialisation in biotechnology at the Amity University, India.
In 2014, she completed her Masters with a research project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, in the group of Prof. Utkan Demirci. Her Master's study involved differentiating neuronal crest stem cells into osteoblast using specialised hydrogel systems. This was followed by a PhD in RMIT University with Distinguished Prof. Leslie Yeo on using Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW) to aid in the delivery and uptake of biological therapeutics and modal molecules in biological cell and tissue cultures. She also perfected the technique to strategically control the depth of penetration of therapeutics in animal tissues using the high frequency SAWs. She joined Prof. Amanda Ellis group in the University of Melbourne in 2020 to work on delivery of DNA hybrid materials synthesised using non-enzymatic DNA synthesis techniques in protocells. She is the winner of Fresh Science representing Victoria at the national level for innovative research discovery and also the winner of 3MT (3 minute) thesis in the School of Engineering in RMIT University. She has also been awarded the Vice-Chancellor Award for best PhD thesis during her PhD (2018) and RMIT prize for Research Excellence (2019).
