Paolin Cáceres Vélez is a J. N. Peters Posdoctoral Fellow at Jusuf Lab. She leads the Project "Using Australian Native Plants to Treat Visual Disorders Through Gene Expression Modulation".
Her research interest lies in understanding the mechanisms of gene modulation by mitochondria-targeted antioxidant therapy, specially on human visual disorders.She has an interdisciplinary background and experience in preclinical tests, genetic toxicology, biomarkers of disease and exposure, drug delivery, and physicochemical characterization of materials. She has been engaged in collaborative projects to address the potential for human and environmental exposure, hazard and risk associated with the use and development of novel materials to improve human health, with academic partners from recognized international institutions, such as the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid - ICMM and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health - FIOH.She obtained her Master (2013) and PhD (2017) degrees in Animal Biology from the University of Brasilia (Brazil). She worked with different human cell lines and established genetic models, such as zebrafish and mice, to understand the hazards and risks that a wide range of compounds and nanomaterials pose to public human health and the environment. She was enrolled in a Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange that allowed her to make different research stays in European leading research institutions, such as CICbiomaGUNE (Spain) and University of Leipzig (Germany). In 2017, she returned to CICbiomaGUNE as a postdoctoral researcher at the Soft Matter Nanotechnology Lab.
