Dr Rachel Canaway manages the research arm of the Victorian primary care practice-based Research & Education Network (VicREN) in the Department of General Practice. In this capacity she is involved in Data for Decisions and the Patron program of research (using a curated database of de-identified information from general practice medical records), and other studies associated with secondary use adn governance of general practice data.

Rachel has previously worked as a Research Fellow involved in a variety of public health, health systems and policy, and complementary medicine related projects. Rachel has worked as a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting on integration of traditional medicine with national health systems in South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. Her key areas of interest include: healthcare regulation and policy; 'big data' and data governance; practitioner and consumer perspectives on healthcare; policy, health systems, provider and consumer perspectives on medical pluralism; and practice-based research networks (PBRNs).
