Professor Stephen Tong is a clinician scientist with a strong interest in translational research. He heads The Translational Obstetrics Group which focuses on developing concepts in the laboratory, and taking these to clinical trials.

His team is involved in three streams of laboratory studies. All three themes have lead to laboratory discoveries which they have taken to international clinical trials/prospective studies: therapeutics for ectopic pregnancy and pre-eclampsia, and non-invasive biomarkers for pregnancy complications. They have developed a medical treatment for ectopic pregnancy that has progressed from preclinical studies to phase I and II clinical trials (performed collaboration with Edinburgh, United Kingdom). They have developed a preclinical screening approach to identify candidate drugs to treat pre-eclampsia. Using this laboratory screening, they have identified a new treatment that they will soon test in a phase II randomised clinical trial in South Africa. Also, The Translational Obstetrics Group has developed a potential non-invasive biomarker test to identify fetuses’ critically hypoxic in utero and in danger of stillbirth. His team is currently running a large multi-centre study that is recruiting participants across eight major referral hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. Prof Tong has published 85-100 peer-reviewed publications. Most are published in leading specialists of his field and in prestigious interdisciplinary journals. He has previously published in The Lancet and Nature. Professor Tong currently holds four NHMRC project grants. He also holds a Clinical Career Development Fellowship Level II. He has also obtained significantly philanthropic funding. He has received two NHMRC Achievement Awards, one in 2007 (Top Ranked Clinical CDA I) and another in 2012 (Top ranked Clinical CDF II).
