Her expertise encompasses contemporary critical theory, psychoanalytical theory including trauma studies and New Materialisms.

She is amongst Australia’s most eminent experts on Artistic Research with graduate supervision, teaching experience and extensive publication in the fields of Visual Arts, Performance, Dance, Film, Theatre and Design—as well as in the field of Indigenous research. Her co-edited volume Practice as Research: Approaches to Creative Arts Enquiry (2007) has been one of the most influential international publications in developing and articulating a paradigm of Artistic Research. It was the first publication to specifically address the pedagogical issues of Artistic Research and lay out a theoretical rationale for the field. Practice as Research; the volume is currently held in over 1200 libraries worldwide and provides a core text in RHD research methods courses both nationally and internationally. From 2013-2018, Barrett was Professor of Research and HDR Coordinator at the Institute of Koorie Education (IKE) at Deakin University. She has worked with Indigenous Australian researchers to develop a research training pedagogy using relational methodologies built on Indigenous epistemologies and that articulate the ethics and protocols for conducting intercultural and Indigenous research. She has developed several Higher Degree by Research Intensive programs. Research and Professional Achievements Barrett is currently an International Fellow of the Centre for Fine Arts Birmingham University and is an invited a member of the EU COST Action IS1307, New Materialism: Networking European Scholarship on ‘How Matter Comes to Matter.” Barrett has been a visiting fellow and keynote at ELOMEDIA School of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design, University of Art and Design, Helsinki and The University of Turku (2007); Gray’s School of Art, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen (2007); York St. John University (2009); The Slade School of Fine Art (2009); Research School of Gender Studies Utrecht University (2013) and the Bartlett School of Architecture University College London (2017). Barrett’s international eminence in the field of Artistic Research is also reflected in recent keynote invitations at institutions keen to gain a greater understanding of Artistic Research: In December 2018, Barrett was the opening Keynote Speaker at the International Symposium on Practice as Research (ISPaR) at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and in February 2018 she was the invited keynote speaker at the Ex-centric Music Studies Conference at Harvard University. In addition to her monograph Kristeva Reframed (2011) she has edited three books with Barbara Bolt was a team member of the OLT funded project Developing New Approaches to Ethics and Research Integrity Training Through Challenges Posed by Creative Practice Research led by Bolt. In 2015, Barrett was member of the convening panel of the of the Sixth International New Materialisms Conference: ‘Transversal Practices, Ecology and Relationality,’ held at the VCA and MCM and subsequently was the editor of a special issue of the international refereed journal Studies in Material Thinking (2016).
