A/Prof Yves d’Udekem has acquired international leadership as an academic surgeon in the field of paediatric cardiac surgery. He migrated from Belgium to Australia in 2003 to work at the Royal Children's Hospital.

His research career is following an ascending trajectory in the Royal Children's Hospital, now one of the world leading centres in paediatric cardiac surgery. His whole research is centred on the long-term consequences of cardiac operations. This research is mainly retrospective, performed on large populations and essentially practical, as it is aimed at modifying surgical techniques and refining management strategies of patients born with congenital heart disease. It resulted in landmarks publications about tetralogy of Fallot, Fontan procedure, aortic valve repair and aortic arch repair.
He has currently two research focuses: the outcomes late after Fontan surgery and after aortic arch repair. He is leading a nationally funded research project aiming at building a national database gathering all heath information of Fontan patients in Australia and New Zealand. This work is today the largest of its kind in the world.
A/Prof Yves d'Udekem has published 125 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. In the last five year he published 70 articles
