Abstract

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) destroys the insulin-producing cells within the islets of the pancreas, causing blood sugar to rise. Transplantation is the only way to restore normal blood sugar control, but there will never be enough human donors to meet demand. We are pursuing an alternative approach using islets from pigs, which will work well in humans if we can prevent them from being rejected.
