Abstract
PUBLIC ABSTRACT Diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) has increased in recent years due to increased mammographic screening. DCIS is considered to be a pre-cancerous lesion but the proportion of invasive cancers that arise from DCIS is unknown. Little is understood about growth patterns of DCIS, and factors associated with progression to invasive cancer are yet to be established. Based on recurrence following surgery, it is estimated that one-third or less will progress to invasive cancer. If this is true, then do the majority of DCIS lesions remain dormant, grow very slowly, or even regress? To address these issues, we will apply statistical models to understand growth and progressio..
