Investigating informal and formal music learning pedagogies in the music classroom: exploring methodology
Australian Society for Mu | Published : 2015
In any research project the methodology adopted and methods aligned with it are underpinned by the beliefs and background of the researcher. This positioning, often implied rather than stated in research, is the subject of this paper, which reflects critically on an early career researcher’s inquiry into the integration of informal and formal music pedagogy in secondary school. This paper probes what framed the researcher’s methodological decisions and the impact of these on the methods chosen. In addition it surveys key studies in the area of informal music learning with a particular focus being to reveal the methodical orientations inherent in these studies.
