Abstract

Topical corticosteroids have a definite role in the management of bacterial keratitis. Their use in acanthamoebic keratitis is controversial and they are not recommended in the presence of fungal infection. In herpes simplex virus-related stromal keratitis and central disciform endotheliitis, the relative roles of viral infection versus the immune response are unclear. Results of clinical trials are needed to help direct management. Herpes simplex virus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of late-onset epithelial defects after keratoplasty.
