Abstract
Results are presented of optimal control studies of a batch sugar crystallizer. The problem is posed as that of producing sugar crystals of desired size in minimum time without forming "false grain" by nucleation. The resulting optimal control policies for feed and evaporation rates led to the establishment of operating principles for the cases of pure syrup feed and of molasses feed. © 1972.
