Abstract

Improved survival following critical illness in the last two decades has resulted in more patients suffering severe critical illness living beyond hospital discharge. However, many of these survivors report ongoing muscle weakness and poor physical function, as well as neurocognitive and psychiatric symptoms that impact their health-related quality of life. Referred to as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) [1], this constellation of symptoms can impact family roles and responsibilities, participation in social activities and the capacity for return to work (Figure 21.1).
