Abstract

While the use of connectionist or neural networks as the reasoning mechanism to replace the execution of symbolic rules within expert systems has attracted much recent attention, less attention has been paid to the integration of connectionist and symbolic techniques within the one system. In this paper we discuss the advantages of hybrid connectionist/symbolic knowledge-based systems and show the practical application of two hybrid architectures.
