Bone health in epilepsy

Abstract

Patients with epilepsy have at least twice the fracture risk of the general population. The mechanisms for this increased fracture rate are likely multi‐factorial, including fractures occurring during seizures, falls with fractures at other times, and underlying bone disease. Monitoring and recognition of the problem may help to prevent fracture‐related morbidity in patients with epilepsy. Further research into causation and best practice management are required and would assist in the development of management guidelines for clinicians.
