Abstract

The development of economies in Asia and the Pacifc has signifcant implications for young people. This article explores the way in which these global developments continue to have uneven outcomes for various groups of young people. It focuses particularly on the way in which gendered inequalities are perpetuated and reinvented, despite expanding educational opportunities for women. Although experiences are diverse across the region, the statistics reveal a common picture of gender inequality as traditional cultural and social practices continue to inform the ways in which new economic and social developments play out.
