Anxiety at three defined intervals was measured by means of the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and a self-rating scale, in twenty consecutive male patients with acute myocardial infarction. The changes in anxiety levels as measured on the STAI were not statistically significant. However, the mean anxiety scores achieved on the self-rating score showed a statistically significant increase in anxiety between the ward and 6 weeks post-discharge.
