Abstract

This chapter provides applications of thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) in medicine. The response of TLDs is based on the elevation of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band after absorption of ionizing radiation. The determination of energy calibrations factor for LiF-TLDs irradiated by mega-voltage electron and photon beams has been investigated. TL dosimeters have a large variety of potential applications in radiotherapy. The inclusion of carbon in the TLD matrix results in the attenuation of the light from the volume of the TL detector. The detected light is emitted mainly from a surface layer, resulting in a signal that is proportional to the dose received in this thin ..
