Medical radiation dosimetry: Concepts and needs

Abstract

Radiation is used widely used in medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Both the desired effects and the potential detrimental side effects depend on the radiation dose delivered. As such it is essential to determining the radiation dose received by patients as accurately as needed to optimise the radiation procedure. Solid state dosimeters are increasingly used in medicine because of their small physical size, high sensitivity and usually low cost.
