Abstract

In May 2009, the Gröningen Institute of Archaeology together with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Lazio exca-vated a 24 by 3m trench at the site of Tratturo Caniò in the Pon-tine plain (province of Latina) in order to establish the detailed stratigraphy and reconstruct late Holocene landscape development and land use history around the protohistoric to late republican remains known from earlier studies dating back to the 1980’s. A rich MBA cultural layer was attested at 1.60 m depth, separated by a 1m thick layer of colluvio-alluvium from the overlying Archaic to Roman Republican remains of a sanctuary commonly attributed to Juno.
