Abstract

This article discusses a collection of 142 coins gathered during the mapping and sampling of a section containing archaeological materials between the mouth of the Astura river and the famous villa of Torre Astura (Lazio, Central Italy). In the absence of a primary stratigraphy – due to wind erosion – these coins provide the most important indicator for the chronology of activity at the site. Coins of small denomination, dating to the later 4th and the 5th century AD, make up the bulk of this collection. However, the relatively high degree of surface wear on many of the coins suggests that they were kept in circulation far beyond their date of issue, possibly even into the advanced 6th centu..
