Abstract

The prior-to-school years are now recognised as an important time during which children can develop an understanding about the purposes and functions of literacy in a literate society. During these early years, if children are given the opportunity, they can develop a strong conceptual framework for literacy that will prepare them well for the formal teaching of literacy they will experience when they start school. However, in Australian preschools, early childhood educators implement play-based pedagogies to encourage children's social and emotional development prior to entering formal schooling.
