Abstract

This chapter sets the stagefor discussion in the book by briefly presenting the political, economic and urban context within which mega townships’ development has been envisaged to be at the forefront of India’s aspiration to become a global economy. The chapter also outlines the key literature on the topic. With mega townships as the tool, this book analyses complexity, scale and challenges associated with the development paradigm in India. The chapter also introduces to the readers the interdisciplinary lenses through which mega townships have been analysed in the book.
