Abstract

Kuru may be the late result of contact with an environmental agent which is transmitted horizontally to women and vertically from mothers to some offspring. The incubation period may range from five to forty or more years. The predisposition to develop kuru after appropriate contact with the environmental agent may be determined genetically.
