Abstract
A novel Finite Difference Beam Propagation Method that is particularly suited for modeling singlemode tapered optical fibers is presented. Experimental near field measurements that prove the validity of the modeling results single tapered optical fibers are then reported. In addition, characterization and testing of tapered multimode optical fibers for use as fluorescence based sensing devices are given.
