Abstract
Discusses results from analysis of the monthly mean Southern Hemisphere circulation and defines an index of the high latitude zonally symmetric mode. Studies the high latitude mode in winter, and presents results for the horizontal structure and the factor time series. Uses the index to obtain composites for the zonal mean zonal wind for negative extremes of the winter high latitude mode, and for zonal mean transient eddy momentum flux. Interaction between the extratropical cyclones in the winter storm track and the zonal flow lead to low frequency variations of flow on time scales of two or more.
