Kinetics of light emission from XeI* produced from electron beam irradiation of gaseous mixtures of Xe and CF3I

Abstract

The temporal characteristics of the light emission from XeI* B(1/2) state was studied following electron beam excitation of mixtures of Xe and CF3I. Two processes were found to be responsible for the formation of the exciplex: (i) a nonionic sequence involving electronically excited states of xenon and ground state CF3I; (ii) an ionic sequence with the main step probably being Xe2+ + I- → XeI* + Xe. The deactivation rate constant of XeI* by CF3I obtained from emission simulation results was determined to be 5 ± 1 × 1011 M-1 s-1. © 1980 American Chemical Society.
