Entangled Threads: Who Owned the West House at Akrotiri?

Abstract

Previous studies of the West House at Akrotiri (Thera) interpret it based on special features of the architecture or with an emphasis on particularistic aspects of its wall paintings. Other studies focus on the extent to which the house symbolizes or demonstrates Minoanization. This paper reconsiders the significance and meaning of the West House from a holistic perspective, taking into consideration its plan, pictorial program, and artifacts, using concepts of entanglement and transculturalism. It will be suggested that the owner was a trader in textiles and that the décor of the house represents aspects of his biography, means of earning a living, and symbolic interactions with the communi..
