Abstract

Screening for trichiasis in areas of endemic trachoma is of great importance. People with trichiasis of only a small number of lashes can often be treated satisfactorily with repeated epilation. More severe trichiasis requires formal lid surgery. A detailed description of the surgical technique used by members of the National Trachoma and Eye Health Programme is given. Careful follow-up is required, whichever form of treatment is used. The importance of community involvement is stressed.
