Neuropsychological aspects of temporal-lobe epilepsy: Seeking evidence-based practice

Abstract

Surgical removal of epileptogenic brain tissue remains a primary treatment modality for some people with a seizure disorder. Assessment of psychological wellbeing and risk of postoperative disability in such patients is a primary goal of clinical neuropsychology in a comprehensive epilepsy program. This case study begins with a reflection on current understanding of assessment of memory, broader cognition and psychopathology in a patient undergoing evaluation for anterior-temporal lobectomy. Pre- and postsurgical assessment results are reported and discussed in terms of an evidence-based approach to neuropsychological assessment.
