Abstract

Suburb as Site was a program designed to engage secondary-level photography students in global spaces and community citizenship through cultural and structural frames, as defined in the New South Wales, Australia Board of Studies Syllabus. Students in the program explored uses of visual coding and semantic cues, considered how visual literacy skills could be applied to photographic artmaking activities, shared photographic ideas about life in their suburban community, and collaborated with students inter-nationally in creating art based on evolved understandings of suburbia.
