RELATION OF GLYCOSIDASES TO AMARYLLIS-VITTATA POLLEN-TUBE GROWTH

Abstract

The role of glycosidases activity in the regulation of pollen tube extension in Amaryllis vittata during in vitro germination was investigated. No significant change in the enzyme activities (α-glucosidase, α-galactosidase, rβ-glucosidase and rβ-galactosidase) at different stages of tube growth was found. No increase in patent rβ-glucosidase activity assayed directly in a suspension of intact germinating pollen was observed. The results are discussed in the light of the differential role of wall-bound glycosidases in cells showing overall surface growth and tip growth I.e., pollen tubes. © 1981 Oxford University Press.
