Psychosocial treatments of rumination disorder: A review of the literature

Abstract

The literature dealing with psychosocial treatments for rumination in both mentally retarded and nonretarded persons is reviewed. Both psychodynamic and behavioural treatments are discussed: the latter including treatments involving punishment variants such as shock, liquid irritants and over-correction; extinction; satiation; combinations of treatments; and miscellaneous treatments. Particular attention is paid to the methodological adequacies of the various studies. General deficiencies are registered in terms of sample descriptions, design, dependent measures, inter-observer reliability, side-effects, procedure, generalization and follow-ups.
