Yeast Infections After Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Abstract

Invasive fungal disease (IFD) caused by yeasts and yeast-like pathogens complicates both autologous and allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Epidemiology varies according to geographic location and antifungal prophylaxis and treatment practices. Invasive candidiasis (IC), including bloodstream infection (candidemia) and deep-seated tissue infection, continues to be the most common yeast infection after HSCT. Risk factors, epidemiology, impact of antifungal prophylaxis, diagnostic approaches including non-culture-based tests and emergence of azole and echinocandin resistance in Candida species are discussed.
