Abstract

Along with the aging of population, the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) has been rapidly increasing. AF has been gaining much attention as one of the major causes of cerebral infarction. It is imperative to establish antithrombotic treatment for AF patients. So far, guidelines for the antithrombotic treatment have been released in the United States, Europe and Japan. European Society of Cardiology has just published new guidelines including verification of the effectiveness of direct thrombin and factor Xa inhibitors.
